A Group 51R automotive battery has a BCI maximum overall size of 9⅜ × 5¹⁄₁₆ × 8¾ inches (238 × 129 × 223 mm), measured length × width × height. Group 51 has the same dimensional envelope but a different terminal arrangement. Do not drop the “R” when ordering a replacement. BCI’s dimensional and terminal-layout chart lists the two separately.

The group number identifies a fitment category—not a universal capacity, chemistry or guarantee that the battery suits your car. Confirm your vehicle’s year, engine and variant before buying.

Group 51R dimensions and polarity

Specification Group 51R reference
Nominal voltage 12 volts
Maximum overall length 9⅜ inches / 238 mm
Maximum overall width 5¹⁄₁₆ inches / 129 mm
Maximum overall height 8¾ inches / 223 mm
Terminal types listed by BCI A or A2 top posts
Difference from Group 51 Reversed terminal arrangement

These are maximum overall dimensions, not a promise that every product has exactly that case size. BCI also distinguishes terminal designs, so check the actual battery’s specification sheet and your cable clamps. Source: BCI chart, pages 14–15.

OPTIMA explains that the “R” denotes reversed post configuration. On its D51R, as you look at the label on top of the battery, positive is on the right and negative on the left; its D51 reverses those positions. In the car, rely on the molded + and − markings and cable routing rather than an unqualified “right-hand positive” description. OPTIMA’s polarity explanation.

Stop if the terminals are on the wrong side or either cable must be stretched. A matching footprint does not make Group 51 a direct substitute for 51R.

CCA, reserve capacity and chemistry vary

Two available replacements illustrate why the group size alone is insufficient:

Battery Chemistry Cold-cranking amps Reserve capacity Advertised U.S. battery price
Interstate MT-51R Flooded lead-acid 500 CCA 85 minutes at 25 amps $209.95 suggested retail
OPTIMA YELLOWTOP D51R AGM 450 CCA 66 minutes at 25 amps $299.99

Prices and specifications checked October 4, 2026. These are product-price examples, not installed-job quotes; confirm local pricing, tax, any core deposit and delivery or installation charges.

Here, the more expensive AGM has lower listed CCA and reserve capacity than the flooded example. That does not establish which lasts longer, but it does show that AGM does not automatically mean higher starting power or greater reserve. Match the vehicle’s required ratings and approved technology. If the vehicle requires AGM, do not downgrade to flooded merely because the case fits. Interstate’s chemistry guidance.

Confirm fit before paying

Interstate’s MT-51R catalogue includes applications such as the 2006 Acura RSX and 2011 Honda Element, but a model listing is only a starting point: run the full vehicle lookup, including engine and applicable notes. It is not a blanket recommendation for every Honda or Acura. Interstate application catalogue.

Use this buying sequence:

  1. Confirm the application. Cross-check the vehicle manual or OEM parts information with a current battery catalogue. Treat the existing battery label as a clue, particularly if a previous owner changed the setup.
  2. Compare the physical fit. Check actual dimensions, post positions, clamp compatibility, cable reach, terminal-cover fit and clearance above the battery.
  3. Check the restraint. The existing hold-down must secure the replacement correctly. Do not accept a loose battery or an improvised spacer; see the battery tray and hold-down fit guide.
  4. Match the electrical requirements. Verify chemistry, CCA and any specified reserve-capacity or amp-hour requirement—not just “51R.”
  5. Scope the replacement job. Ask whether the quote includes testing, removal, installation, terminal cleaning and old-battery return. Confirm any vehicle-specific reset, registration or coding procedure separately; the group-size label cannot answer that question.

If the catalogue, installed battery and vehicle information disagree, resolve the discrepancy before disconnecting anything or purchasing a substitute group size.
