Ford Fusion Battery: Match the Year, Engine and Powertrain

Check Ford Fusion 12-volt battery fitment, gas versus hybrid access, dated price examples and the reset questions to ask before replacement.

There is no single battery size for every Ford Fusion. Match the model year, engine, gas or hybrid powertrain, and Auto-Start-Stop equipment before buying. Ford’s 2020 gasoline-model manual alone lists both T5 and H6 battery part numbers, depending on configuration. Ford’s 2020 owner’s manual, pages 321–324

This guide covers the 12-volt battery in the North American Fusion sedan, not the high-voltage propulsion battery in a Fusion Hybrid or Energi. The retail examples below run from about $185 to $265 for the battery alone, but they are different fitments—not interchangeable choices.

Test before replacing

On a gasoline Fusion, slow cranking or rapid clicking warrants battery, cable and charging-system testing. If the battery is simply discharged, recharge and retest it before condemning it; a charging fault or damaged connection can otherwise leave the replacement with the same problem. RepairPal’s diagnostic guidance

For a Hybrid or Energi no-start, ask for testing of the 12-volt battery and its charging system, rather than assuming the propulsion battery needs replacement. Ford’s Hybrid/Energi manual has a separate 12-volt battery maintenance section with its own replacement requirements. Ford’s 2019 Hybrid/Energi manual, pages 265–266

Stop if the battery is leaking or damaged. Seek professional assistance rather than attempting a routine swap or jump-start. This guide does not cover work on high-voltage wiring, service disconnects or the propulsion battery pack.

Which Ford Fusion battery size fits?

These are specific Ford manual examples, not a complete year-by-year fitment chart:

Vehicle configuration Battery listed by Ford Shopping starting point
2012 gasoline Fusion, 2.5L, 3.0L or 3.5L BXT-96R-500 Group 96R
2020 gasoline Fusion, 1.5L EcoBoost BAGM-48H6-760 H6 / Group 48 AGM
2020 gasoline Fusion, 2.0L EcoBoost BXT-90T5-590 for Intelligent Access; BAGM-48H6-760 for Automatic-Start-Stop Confirm the equipment before choosing T5 or H6 AGM

Before ordering, give the supplier your VIN and compare the proposed replacement with the tray, cables and installed battery. Check:

  • Case length, width and height, including clearance above the terminals.
  • Positive/negative terminal layout and cable reach.
  • Hold-down attachment and tray fit.
  • Required battery technology and electrical ratings.
  • Vent connection, if fitted.

The installed battery is a useful comparison, but a previous owner may have fitted the wrong one. Keep the specified AGM technology where required; an ordinary flooded battery is not a like-for-like substitute. A broad retailer “Fusion” page lists several groups and still requires an exact-vehicle fitment check. AutoZone’s Fusion battery catalogue

Where is the battery, and what does access involve?

Gasoline Fusion: Use the applicable under-hood overview to identify components before working. For the 2020 1.5L, 2.0L and 2.5L engines, those diagrams are on pages 258–260. Check the actual cover, cable routing and hold-down before planning removal. Ford’s 2020 manual

Hybrid/Energi example: Ford’s 2019 manual places the 12-volt battery on the left-hand side of the luggage compartment, behind an access door. Do not assume that location applies to every earlier hybrid model year. Ford’s 2019 Hybrid/Energi manual, page 265

Both manuals direct owners to an authorized dealer for low-voltage battery access, testing or replacement. If you choose DIY, obtain the procedure for your exact vehicle rather than assuming a universal Fusion removal sequence.

For a conventional 12-volt swap, apply the parking brake, switch the ignition and accessories off, and keep the key away from the vehicle. The general cable order is negative off first, positive off second; positive on first, negative on last. Wear eye protection and keep sparks and flames away. Refit the hold-down, cover and any vent tube. Ford warns that an improperly reconnected vent tube can allow harmful gases into the cabin. Cable-order guidance · Ford replacement cautions

What does replacement cost?

The AutoZone U.S. storefront displayed these examples on October 29, 2026:

Retail battery example Battery-only price
Duralast T5-DL, flooded, 590 CCA $184.99
Duralast Gold 96R-DLG, flooded, 590 CCA $224.99
Duralast Platinum H6-AGM, 760 CCA $264.99

Each listing also showed a $22 refundable core deposit. These are storefront examples, not guaranteed nationwide prices. Confirm fitment, local price, taxes, delivery and whether installation is included. AutoZone listings

For installed service, RepairPal’s estimate, updated September 3, 2026, lists a model-wide average of $303–$320, with parts around $267 and labor of $37–$54. Its year-specific figures differ substantially—for example, $467–$484 for 2020—so the headline average is not a quote for every Fusion. Taxes, fees and location adjustments are excluded. Compare a DIY parts price with itemized independent-shop and dealer quotes. Ask each installer to include testing, the exact battery part number, access labor, terminal service, core credit and warranty. Our battery replacement cost guide explains how to compare those totals.

After replacement: ask about BMS and relearns

Do not assume a reset sequence from another Ford model applies to your Fusion. Ask the installer: “Does this VIN require a battery-monitoring-system reset, and is it included?” Keep that question separate from clock, window and engine-control relearns.

Ford’s 2020 gasoline Fusion battery section describes a battery management system and warns against grounding added electrical devices directly to the battery’s negative post, which can cause inaccurate battery-condition measurements. That section does not provide a BMS reset sequence. It does give a post-disconnection procedure for restoring settings and relearning idle/fuel trim, including at least 12 miles of driving. Use the complete procedure in your applicable manual, not that distance alone; hybrid guidance differs. Ford’s battery replacement guidance

If charging warnings or repeated discharge remain after replacement, return for diagnosis rather than repeatedly resetting the system.
