For a standard flooded 12-volt car battery, a useful starting budget is $90–$225 for the battery alone, or $230–$450 or more for an AGM battery, based on AutoZone’s published price guidance. Installation may be free on an eligible vehicle, or billed separately.

Those are retailer ranges—not a universal installed price. Your vehicle’s year, engine, equipment, battery location and electronic setup determine the actual job. This guide uses U.S. dollars and prices checked October 6, 2026; it does not cover hybrid or EV high-voltage traction-pack replacement.

What you pay depends on how it is replaced

Replacement route Price basis What to confirm
DIY Correct battery, plus any tools and setup costs Fitment, access and the vehicle-specific replacement procedure
Parts-store installation Battery price; labor may be included Whether your exact vehicle qualifies and whether electronic setup is covered
Independent shop Battery plus labor and any separately billed diagnosis or setup An itemized, out-the-door quote
Mobile replacement Provider’s installed quote Service area, vehicle eligibility, delivery and testing inclusions
Dealer Vehicle-specific parts and service quote Battery part number, labor, setup and warranty coverage

Free installation can make DIY savings small. AutoZone advertises free installation on most vehicles at most locations. Walmart also advertises free installation with Walmart battery purchases. Call before buying to confirm eligibility and exclusions: an installation offer does not establish that the provider can handle your car’s access or electronic requirements.

For a paid-labor reference, RepairPal’s general estimate, updated September 3, 2026, lists $61–$90 for labor. Treat that as a comparison point, not a fixed charge for every vehicle; its estimate excludes taxes and fees and does not account for your location.

Mobile service is not necessarily battery price plus a separate callout charge. AAA Northeast lists pricing starting at $215.99 plus tax installed, with testing, delivery, installation and old-battery recycling included. That offer applies within its territory, with membership terms and restrictions; make, model and service location affect the quote.

Check the battery specification before comparing prices

Give each seller the same model year, make, model, engine, trim and VIN. Ask them to identify the approved battery, rather than pricing whichever battery physically fits.

Confirm:

  • Technology: conventional flooded, enhanced flooded battery (EFB), or absorbent glass mat (AGM).
  • Case and connections: group size, terminal position, hold-down compatibility and any required vent connection.
  • Electrical ratings: required cold-cranking amps, capacity and other vehicle specifications.
  • Quantity: whether the quote replaces only the main battery or also an auxiliary battery.

Do not save money by downgrading an AGM or EFB application to an ordinary flooded battery. VARTA’s replacement guidance says AGM should be replaced with AGM, and start-stop replacements must use a manufacturer-approved type.

Published price ranges also have exceptions. Walmart’s online listing showed an EverStart Value Group 24F battery at $81.37 on October 6, 2026, with Sacramento Supercenter selected for pickup. That is a specific product price—not evidence that it fits your car or that $81.37 is your final bill.

Access and electronic setup can change the bill

A battery under an accessible hood is a different job from one requiring removal of trim or other components. Batteries can also be located in the trunk, under seats or in a wheel well, as RepairPal notes.

Ask whether your vehicle needs battery registration, a battery-management-system reset or coding, and whether the quote includes it. These requirements are not universal: VARTA describes both self-learning systems and systems requiring registration with a diagnostic tool, with some manufacturers using different approaches by model.

DIY stop point: if you cannot verify the access procedure or complete the required electronic setup, compare complete professional quotes before disconnecting the old battery.

Get the full quote—and test before authorizing replacement

A no-start does not, by itself, prove the battery needs replacing. A discharged battery may need charging and retesting, while charging-system or cable faults may need repair. RepairPal recommends testing the starting and charging system. If the diagnosis is unclear, start with our no-crank checks.

Then request:

“Please quote the correct battery for this VIN, including installation, required registration or reset, diagnosis, taxes and fees. Show any refundable core deposit separately, and confirm the battery warranty.”

A core deposit affects what you pay initially, but an eligible return can reduce the final cost. AutoZone says to bring the core and receipt back for a core refund; check your seller’s rules and keep the receipt. Our battery core-charge guide explains the distinction between refundable deposits and other fees.

Compare the same approved battery specification and complete service scope, not just the lowest headline price.
