Dodge Charger Battery Fitment Starts With the Model Year

For a 2006–2023 gasoline Dodge Charger, the two main battery-size leads are 94R/H7 and 49/H8. Do not buy from that range alone: the correct battery can change with model year, engine, police equipment, market and the tray or hold-down installed in the car.

The 2024 Charger Daytona is a different vehicle with both a 12-volt battery and a high-voltage propulsion battery. An older Charger fitment result does not confirm its low-voltage battery.

Interstate’s Charger guide identifies 94R/H7 and 49/H8 as the principal sizes for 2006–2022 cars, with a stated 730–850 CCA requirement depending on application. It specifies H8 for police-package cars and valve-regulated AGM for 2021–2022 police-package models (Interstate Batteries). Retail catalogs also list both H7 and H8 products for the 2023 Charger, but still flag them for a vehicle-specific fitment check (AutoZone).

H7 versus H8: six checks that settle the choice

H7 is also sold as BCI Group 94R; H8 corresponds to Group 49. An H8 listing is not automatically an upgrade from H7.

Before ordering, check:

1. VIN fitment: Use the full year, engine and package—or the VIN—in a current catalog.
2. Existing battery label: Record its group size, CCA and chemistry before removal.
3. Tray and hold-down: Confirm that the case sits flat and the factory retainer secures it.
4. Terminal layout: The cables must reach their correct posts without stretching or crossing.
5. Chemistry: Replace a factory AGM battery with AGM. Do not infer the required chemistry from group size alone.
6. Venting: A trunk-mounted replacement needs compatible vent ports, a connected vehicle vent hose and the unused port closed with the proper plug.

Do not choose by CCA alone. Extra cranking output can add margin, but correct fit, chemistry and capacity come first; see when a high-CCA battery helps.

Location and venting on gasoline Chargers

On the 2023 Charger, the battery is under an access cover in the trunk, while remote positive and negative posts under the hood are provided for jump-starting. Dodge also says the battery has a vent hose and should be replaced only with the same vented type (2023 Dodge Charger owner’s manual). Consult the manual for an earlier model before assuming its access details are identical.

The vent connection is part of the fit. Interstate directs installers to connect the vehicle hose to the battery vent port and plug the opposite port on batteries mounted in a trunk or passenger compartment (Interstate Batteries). Stop if the battery cannot be secured, the vent parts do not match, a cable is damaged or wiring near a terminal is unclear.

A general replacement sequence is:

1. Park securely, switch the ignition and accessories off, remove the key and keep the trunk open.
2. Lift the cargo floor and battery access cover.
3. Photograph the cables, vent hose and hold-down before disturbing them.
4. Disconnect the negative cable first, followed by the positive cable.
5. Remove the vent hose and hold-down, then lift the battery without tipping it.
6. Install and secure the verified replacement. Reconnect the vent hose and close the unused vent opening with the correct plug.
7. Connect the positive cable first, followed by the negative cable.
8. Confirm that the battery, terminals and vent connection are secure, then check starting and charging operation.

2024 Charger Daytona: use a separate fitment path

The 2024 Charger Daytona handbook places its 12-volt battery under an access cover in the hatch and its remote jump posts under the hood. Separately, the lithium-ion high-voltage battery is beneath the vehicle, and its service disconnect is under the cargo-area load floor at the front left. Dodge warns owners not to remove that disconnect or service the high-voltage components (2024 Charger Daytona owner handbook).

Order a Daytona 12-volt battery by VIN and obtain the model-specific replacement procedure. Do not use an H7 or H8 listing for a 2006–2023 gasoline Charger as confirmation, and do not disturb orange high-voltage cables or the traction-battery service disconnect.
