Honda CR-V Battery: Match the Year and Engine Before Buying

Compare CR-V 12-volt battery fitment, U.S. price examples, hybrid differences, and installation and reset checks before replacement.

There is no single battery size for every Honda CR-V. Group 51R, Group 47/H5 and Group 51 all appear in CR-V fitment catalogues, depending on year and engine. Even the same model year can use different batteries.

This guide covers the 12-volt battery, with U.S. price examples. A CR-V Hybrid also has a separate high-voltage propulsion battery; replacing that pack is a different repair. Honda’s hybrid-system explanation distinguishes the two and warns against dismantling high-voltage components or disconnecting their wiring.

1. Match the year, engine and battery technology

Use these catalogue examples to identify the right starting point—not as permission to buy without checking your exact vehicle. They are selected applications, not a complete all-years chart.

CR-V year and engine Catalogue battery example What matters
2009, 2.4-liter gasoline Group 51R, flooded Interstate explicitly lists this application in its international catalogue. Fitment
2016 gasoline Group 51R listings AutoZone lists flooded and AGM options; verify the selected product against the vehicle. Catalogue
2017, 2.4-liter gasoline Group 51R, flooded Do not transfer this specification to the 1.5-liter engine. Fitment
2017, 1.5-liter gasoline Group H5, AGM example Interstate recommends its MTX-47/H5 for this engine; this does not establish that AGM was the factory battery. Fitment
2020 and 2024, 1.5-liter gasoline Group H5, enhanced flooded battery (EFB) example Check the Auto Idle Stop battery requirement. 2020 fitment, 2024 fitment
2024, 2.0-liter hybrid Group 51, flooded This is the 12-volt battery, not the propulsion pack—and not Group 51R. Fitment

Before ordering, give the supplier your VIN, model year, engine and hybrid/non-hybrid status. Compare its recommendation with the installed battery’s label and the vehicle’s requirements:

  • Group size, case dimensions and terminal polarity.
  • Flooded, EFB or AGM technology.
  • Required cold-cranking amps (CCA) and capacity specifications.
  • Cable reach, terminal covers, tray and hold-down fit.

The old battery is a useful cross-check, not final authority: a previous owner may have fitted the wrong one. If the catalogue and installed battery disagree, resolve that before disconnecting anything.

Auto Idle Stop is a stop point. Honda’s 2025 gasoline CR-V manual says the battery is specifically designed for Auto Idle Stop and that a different type may shorten battery life or prevent the feature from activating. A battery that physically fits is not necessarily suitable.

For more on the older application’s case and polarity, see our Group 51R fitment guide.

2. Scope the replacement cost

Price examples checked October 8, 2026, in U.S. dollars:

Battery-only example Listed price Additional charge shown
Duralast 51R-DL, flooded, 425 CCA $184.99 $22 refundable core deposit
Duralast Gold 51R-DLG, flooded, 500 CCA $219.99 $22 refundable core deposit
Duralast Platinum H5-EFB, EFB, 650 CCA $179.99 $22 refundable core deposit
Duralast Platinum H5-AGM, AGM, 680 CCA $259.99 $22 refundable core deposit

For a service benchmark, RepairPal lists CR-V battery replacement at $248–$271. Treat that as an estimate, not a ceiling: the correct battery, local labor and additional repairs determine your bill.

Compare DIY, independent-shop and dealer options using the same battery specification. Ask each provider to itemize:

  • Battery brand, part number, technology and warranty.
  • Installation labor and terminal cleaning.
  • Battery and charging-system testing.
  • Any damaged terminal, sensor or hold-down repair.
  • Applicable post-replacement reset or relearn work.
  • Taxes, fees, and whether returning the old battery removes the core charge.

If the battery was previously replaced, check the receipt before buying again. Our Honda battery warranty guide explains why coverage depends on where and how the battery was purchased.

3. Test before replacing a repeatedly flat battery

Slow cranking, clicking or an unresponsive vehicle justify testing—not automatically a new battery. RepairPal recommends checking the starting and charging system, recharging and retesting a low-charge battery, and considering cables, wiring and charging faults. A replacement will not cure an unresolved discharge problem. Diagnosis guidance

On a hybrid, do not interpret every no-start as propulsion-battery failure. Honda provides a 12-volt jump-start procedure for the 2024 CR-V Hybrid, followed by vehicle inspection.

4. Plan access, installation and resets

The 12-volt battery is accessed under the hood in Honda’s documented 2025 gasoline and 2024 hybrid jump-start procedures. Confirm the layout and replacement procedure for your own year before starting.

For an accessible, conventional 12-volt swap, the basic sequence is:

  1. Park securely, apply the parking brake, switch the vehicle fully off and turn off electrical accessories. On a hybrid, an engine that has stopped automatically does not mean the power system is off.
  2. Wear protective clothing and a face shield; keep sparks, flames and smoking materials away.
  3. Disconnect and isolate negative first, then positive. Do not let a tool bridge the positive terminal and body metal.
  4. Remove the hold-down and lift out the battery upright.
  5. Inspect the tray and terminals, then secure the correctly matched replacement using the vehicle-specific tightening specifications.
  6. Reconnect positive first, negative last; refit terminal covers.

The cable order follows Honda’s instructions and RepairPal’s replacement guidance; Honda specifies a face shield for battery maintenance. Stop if the battery is leaking, access is unclear, or the cables and hold-down cannot secure the new battery properly.

Protect the negative-terminal sensor. Honda documents battery-monitoring sensors on both the 2025 gasoline CR-V and 2024 Hybrid.

Do not treat warning-light clearing or audio reactivation as battery registration. Have the installer check the VIN-specific service procedure and identify any required reset or relearn before agreeing to a setup charge.

For the 2025 gasoline CR-V and 2024 Hybrid, Honda says certain stability, braking, driver-assistance and tire-pressure indicators may appear after reconnection. It directs a short drive above 12 mph (20 km/h); if they do not clear, have the vehicle checked. Follow this only when the vehicle is otherwise safe to drive—not as a reason to ignore persistent warnings. Gasoline instructions, hybrid instructions

The audio system may also need reactivation. For the 2025 gasoline CR-V, Honda says to set power mode to ON, turn on the audio system, then hold the Volume/Power knob for more than two seconds. If the audio unit is not recognized, have a dealer check it. Use your own year’s audio theft-protection instructions rather than assuming the same method applies to every CR-V.
